Initiated by one of Kenya’s popular fashion entrepreneur, David Avido, Kibera Fashion Week is a community based project aiming to redefine fashion and creativity while showcasing beauty and talent as a way of changing the narrative about Nairobi’s largest informal settlement-Kibera.
It is raising awareness about sustainable consumption in the local fashion industry trying to reduce fast fashion. Bringing together over 20 models and 15 different fashion designers, Kibera Fashion Week 2023 produced over 100 originals designs for showcase. With this it is bringing out creatives to rethink fashion and uplift a community predominantly known as a place of need and poverty.
These images were taken while I was shooting the documentary film ‘Kibera Fashion Week’ exploring the behind-the-scenes, the process and the people involved in the making.
Shot and directed by Kelvin Juma Location: Kibera and Nairobi CBD.
