Benta ,36, a hair dresser, sprays a customer’s hair after plaiting. 80% of women in Kibera sustain their livelihood with self-employment. Factors such as high rates of unemployment and lack of proper education for women and girls which fetch low paying jobs that cannot sustain livelihoods has led to existence of entrepreneurial ventures allover Kibera slum. Plastics bags are still being used silently by street venors despite the ban on single use plastic bags by the Kenyan governemtn in 2017. Mohammed consumes at least 3 kilograms of single use plastic daily. Vendors are finding it hard and expensive to use the atlernative which is the biodegradable paper.

In rural Kenya, young and adolescent girls are exposed to tougher challenges compared to boys. From being vulnerable to early marriages, sexual initiation and exploitation to unwanted pregnancies, a large percentage are unable to learn and thrive in school leading to early school drop outs. Inexpensive essentials such sanitary towels have become a luxury that many families cannot afford. Quality education seems to be the solution to girls having the power to make right choices yet the solution itself is threatened by the circumstances of underdeveloped or marginalized areas.
